The laminating industry is a growing segment of the packaging market. This industry uses a variety of different materials to produce high quality and durable packaging products.
Laminates are a type of composite material made up of layers that are permanently bonded together by heat, pressure or adhesive. The layers can be thin aluminum foil, paper, metal or other flexible substrates.
In some cases, the materials used in the layers may require a specific adhesive to perform additional functions like increased gas permeability or flame resistance. Generally, the adhesive in a laminate needs to be strong enough to hold up to the load of the final product for a long time.
Overlaminates are also available that are not based on PVC. These include polypropylene (PP), polyester, and others.
Some of these materials may meet some application requirements better than PVC, such as enhanced durability or UV resistance. Other materials might be more environmentally friendly and easier to print on, explains Adrian Cook, marketing manager for digital print films and overlaminates at 3M Commercial Solutions.
Laminations can be applied to a wide range of applications including medical and healthcare, automotive, electrical and electronics, retail, food and beverages, and decorative. For instance, the automotive and electrical & electronics industries often use decorative laminates to give vehicles an attractive appearance without increasing the cost of manufacturing the vehicle.
